Common Ruger LCR 22 Mag Problems and Solutions

The table below shows a summarized version of the problems and solutions I am about to describe. Let’s have a quick look.

Quick Overview of the Problems and Solutions

ProblemsSolutions
MisfiringClean the chamber, change the ammo brand, and don’t fire dry too often.
Extraction failureTry a different ammo brand, clean properly, or polish inside the chamber.
Trigger too stiffBreak in the gun firing 300/400 rounds, train with it, clean the gun, replace faulty parts, or install a lighter trigger.

1. Misfiring Issue

Some user complaints tell that a few LCR 22 magnum revolvers shoot the second time pressing the trigger.

Possible Reasons

From the nature of this problem, you can understand that it happens sometimes. The faulty units’ misfire rate is 30% to 40%.

The primary reason for the misfiring problem is the ammunition.

Another two probable causes are not cleaning the gun regularly and too much dry firing.

The Fix

For solving this problem, you first need to clean the gun properly. As a beginner, this video can help you know the procedure.

A dirty cylinder can prevent a proper rotating action resulting in misfires.

After that, try changing the ammo brand. Read your owner’s manual and buy the recommended type of ammunition.

Lastly, don’t try dry firing too often as it is not suitable for this kind of rimfire revolver.

Tip: Beware of Winchester Super X JHP 40 grain JHP bullets as it is not good for LCR 22 Mag revolvers.

2. Extraction Issues

The fired shells get stuck in such a way that it needs a hammer and lots of force to extract. This is the nature of this issue.

Possible Reasons

First of all, you need to identify whether the problem is occurring due to the ammo you are using.

Improper shell size prevents them from extracting as heating shells increase in size a bit and get stuck inside the chamber.

Grease is another major cause of extraction failure. And, it happens to almost all types of revolvers of this kind.

The Fix

Those who are shooting with several different brands of ammo should consider changing the brand and using the officially recommended ones.

After that, proper cleaning of the gun is required to remove excess packing grease.

Manufacturers use this grease in order to protect the metal parts from rusting in storage.

The first rule of handling a new gun is to clean it after unboxing and every usage.

I have seen some users taking the gun to a local gunsmith and polishing it inside the chambers so that it can support different types of ammo.

You can do it too but it may void the warranty. So, be careful of such modifications.

3. Trigger Problems

The trigger pull weight of an LCR 22 is way more than normal. Sometimes, it crosses the 12-pound spec and reaches up to 13 pounds.

Possible Reasons

Such a trigger pill weight is intentional. By design, Ruger made the 22 Magnum model this way to introduce safety.

Sometimes, dirt buildup, rust, and weak springs can increase the stiffness to an unacceptable level.

The Fix

Shooting 300 or 400 rounds with a new LCR 22 Magnum revolver crosses the breaking period.

It smoothens the trigger-pulling action slightly. Also, long-time practicing with the gun makes you habituated to the pull weight.

The next step is to disassemble the gun and inspect the components related to the trigger mechanism.

Clean the dirt and remove rust from the parts if you see any.

At the same time, check the strength of the trigger spring. Replace it in case it has become faulty.

I have seen some users install modified triggers that have a lesser trigger pull weight.

Consulting with an expert (probably a local gunsmith), you can do it too.

User Feedback on Ruger LCR 22 Mag

The build quality of the LCR 22 Magnum surely deserves some credit for its innovative design and features.

I want to particularly mention the e-nickel Teflon use to strengthen critical engagement surfaces.

As carry gun, it is recommended by many experts. For close-range shooting, this firearm is reliable.

However, you should not rely on it for long-range shooting. I have seen it perform poorly even at a 15-yard distance.

Though the user feedback on Ruger LCR 22 magnum revolver is mixed, most of them are good.

Overall, users rate this gun a 4.1 out of 5.

Top 3 Alternative Guns of Ruger LCR 22 Mag

I know that some of you want to know about some Ruger LCR 22 magnum alternatives after knowing those problems.

Doing some research, I have found three pistols worth recommending. Let’s get to know them in short.

Smith & Wesson 43 C

Due to having a light recoil and all-around utility, the 43C is popular among small game hunters.

Beretta 21A Bobcat

The 21A Bobcat is smaller than the LCR; still, it can hold 8 rounds in the magazine. Also, the pistol offers both double and single action.

Taurus PT-22

The small and lightweight design is the strong suit of PT-22. For easy-to-shoot features, this pistol is good for beginners.

  1. I purchased my new Ruger LCX 22 mag revolver on 02/28/2023 and took it to the range on 03/14,2023. After shooting 12 rounds of quality and recommended ammo the cylinder jammed and became almost impossible to open . I contacted Ruger and have sent the revolver to them for the needed repairs or replacement . From what I have read this type of problem is a recurring one. I have owned other Ruger revolvers and have never experienced this type of problem that appears to be a recurring issue with the Ruger LCX 22 mag.

    1. Dan my LCRx had about 200 rounds through it and same issue as yours… cylinder jammed. Only shot CCI brand ammo. It’s going in for repairs.
